A cardiac arrest or Sudden Cardiac Death is often referred to as a heart attack, this is not the case as a heart attack is caused by a blockage in the artery which stops or greatly slows down the blood going to the heart. This makes it impossible for the heart to continue circulating blood as is necessary to sustain life. A cardiac arrest on the other hand occurs when the signals in the brain do not transmit correctly to control the pumping of the heart muscle.

There is no denying that school aged children are less likely to suffer a heart attack than other members of our society, however the fact remains that they can and do occasionally suffer sudden cardiac arrest. In the school, setting this event is most commonly seen in the athletes. Congenital diseases and defects often are the contributing factor especially when athletic activity is particularly harsh. When this does happen, the outcome is often fatal.
